In the Spring of 1998, John Reeves and others from dcf Clemson began meeting in Athens on Sundays with the intention of starting a new church. John met Murphy Wolford of Tasty World who was kind enough to allow the first floor of his bar to be used on Sunday mornings rent free. John also met Matt Davis who had friends from the Clemson church. However, John felt led by God to move his family to Atlanta to begin a new church there.

It appeared that Athens would be on indefinite hold, but God has His own way of working things out. John and Chet Boyd (from Augusta GA/Wingate NC) talked and prayed, and God put it on Chet’s heart to move to Athens, which he did in August of 1998.

To say that the first year was tough would be a great understatement. Chet states, “The first year was very hard for me personally. I had never really experienced that kind of failure in ministry before. But I thank God for that humbling time. If we had immediately been successful, I really believe I could have been ruined by pride.”

In the summer of 1999, dcf had three interns. Joe Ellis and Amanda Pfaller from dcf Clemson and our own Adam Hoover. Our little church began to grow and we were now meeting on the 2nd Floor of Tasty World. Setup times were always fun. Our sound system would travel from Matt’s 2nd floor apartment to his Explorer to Tasty World and then up the stairs. After our time of worship we would break it down and take it back down the stairs. Then it would travel back to Matt’s apartment. We didn’t mind 4-5 hours of labor for an hour and a half of corporate worship and fellowship. In fact we found that working together grew us together. During the summer of 2000, God provided the awesome opportunity to renovate the Third Floor of Tasty World. After many hours of sweat, a great shortage of sleep, a few tears, and yes, a little blood, our new home was ready. We are reminded again that our church is our people wherever we meet.

Being a part of World Missions has also been at the heart of dcf. We have been to Mexico many times and we had a team in Spain for the summer of 2001.

We desire to see God work all over this world He created, and we are thankful to be able to play a role in reaching people here and abroad.
