Homestyle Food

I only heard bits and pieces of the conversation - but we’re having homestyle food this week. The main course is sausage from Lydia. Have fun with sides!

sausage (serving 8-10) - Lydia
a little fried chicken in case - Lyndie
side - Lyndie - macaroni & cheese
side - Lydia - green bean casserole
side - Rachel - veggie/bean side
side - Jeff - smashed potatoes
bread - Jeff
drinks & ice
dessert -

I will bring Macaroni and Cheese.
Lyd and Matt will bring Green Bean Casserole as well.

I definitely would not call the sausage a “main dish” - but a “meat option.”

So do we need another meat option? Are you and Matt eating meat now? James isn’t and I know Rachel and I could go either way. How many do you think the sausage will feed? I can bring some chicken if I need to.

And how exactly is sausage “homestyle”? Maybe in Germany… I think for it to be homestyle there has to be some fried meat. Not that I am opposed to sausage in any way. Maybe just change the title to “German Homestyle”.

I’ll pick up some fried meat to bring to make it “southern” homestyle!

It’s BBQ crock pot sausage (GOUGE) - so, no German influence there.

It’ll serve about 8-10 folks.

Matt eats meat still.

And I’ll cheat for sausage.

So if I choose some random meat and put it in a crock pot with BBQ sauce, does that make it homestyle?

I would say “homestyle” means its something mom would’ve fixed - comfort food.

By the way - I think my family is going to come after the game - the kids want to come - yay! They should get there at about 7:30 and I think they’re planning on eating there, so we will have our full group this week.

I will bring some sort of veggie or bean side.

More than normal number of kids, or the normal? (normal meaning 2 or 3 boys and Danielle) Or are they bringing the team with them? Do we need to have extra food, or just the normal amount? Should we not even plan on being there until 7.30?

I think you are confusing “homestyle” with “Gouge-style.” Since when did we live under an oppressive fascist food definition dictatorship?

So if homestyle is determined by something your mom would make, then whose mom are we using as the measuring stick? My mom doesn’t make sausage in BBQ sauce. Unless you are talking about little smokies. And those hardly qualify as an entree. You only find those at low-budget wedding receptions (no offense if anyone used these at their wedding, I think they are a great addition).

I’m just in search of the truth, people…

I’m going to let Robbie and Lydia work the homestyle definition out - but I haven’t had sausage in BBQ sauce before, either. If Lydia’s willing to eat meat for it - then it must be good!

We just need the normal amount of food - 2 or 3 kids, not a whole basketball team!

I assumed we would still meet at about 6:30 and my parents could eat during the lesson. James and I and go with the kids to eat when they get there. Pushing the whole thing back is up to y’all - it would definitely keep us out later.

I will bring rolls and plain old smashed potatoes,
unless some of the nutritionists have a better more balanced suggestion.
home style means cooked at home. whose home is another matter, for instance I don’t think that Jeffrey Dahmer’s house would be a good choice for a homestyle meal. (all comments not based on experience. Please forward any legal question to my counsel M. Wells esq.)

I’ll do the drinks and ice.

And let there be no doubt, it will be “homestyle” drinks and ice. Whatever that means. I guess it should have BBQ sauce in it…

I think your sweet tea is “homestyle” enough - please no BBQ sauce!

We are unable to participate in the sharing of “homestyle food”, since it all involves barbecue sauce, but we will bring some “soul food”, not to be confused with “country cookin”. We will bring some type of pie or cobbler and ice cream.

Randy

I say we skip all the homestyle stuff and just eat the soul food dessert.

Do you people know how much I love all of you. I have laughed harder at all these post than I have laughed all week. It looks like everything is covered for food but we will try and think of something “Homestyle.” And Robbie we did have BBQ Little Smokies at the wedding. And they were a big hit I might add.

Love You All
Melanie

Wow! Someone call me and let me know if you think of something I can bring! I was thinking sweet tea because if it’s made at home and there’s sweet tea, well then, that’s homecooking! (No matter what Robbie says.) So don’t forget the sweet tea Robbie!!

The word “homestyle” is rather confusing.

In fact the 2 always accurate web authoriities, wikipedia and dictionary.com are nearly silent on the subject. Wikipedia produced no results, and dictionary.com only had 1953-1958 as a clue to its meaning. I don’t find that very helpful.

The Schimmel HF has an opportunity to benefit all humankind by coming to a conclusion of what “homestyle” means and sharing it on Wikipedia. You can become the authoritative voice on the subject…if you can agree on what it means.

I am also willing to help in this most noble endeavor. Please make 1 plate of the items from tonight’s meal and send to 400 Greencrest Drive via one Robbie - sometimes snobbie about food definitions - Gouge. I will shortly give you a response on my feelings of its “homestyleness”. I am a valuable service for you because Wikipedia always likes it when you cite other sources to support your authoritative claims. Glad to be of assistance….c3

PS - for accuracy purposes please make sure portions are of significant size!

While I’m at my so-called snobbery, Chet, I might point out that “snobbie” is spelled with a “y” and not an “ie”. Good grief.

I’d be up for a forum spelcheker :)
