Handyman Center

“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us” (Romans 12: 4-6).

Hey guys, I thought about this the other day and was really pressed to follow through with it. A lot of us have purchased homes and have performed numerous “handyman” jobs. While we all can’t be as handy as Jeff Brown, some of us our “handier” than others. With that in mind, I have a few observations: (1) guys in general are terrible about asking for help with something and (2) most guys are hesitant to ask to borrow something.

I’d really like to overcome these gender weaknesses together. What I propose is…a HANDYMAN CENTER.

(1) List your skill-set
(2) List some jobs you’ve done in the past 12 months for which you could serve as a resource to share tips
(3) List jobs/skill-set you’d like to learn
(4) List tools you have you DON’T MIND lending out

The trick is the presentation. Instead of us guys asking for help, just check and see if there’s anyone with the desire to learn and help with your upcoming project (in otherwords, instead of asking for help, you’re granting it). Likewise, instead of feeling awkward about asking to borrow something, if its on the database, they’ve already said “yes”.

If someone has an upcoming project, post it on the HANDYMAN CENTER so that poeple know about it (it might save you some heartache and cash). The idea behind this is that I’d hate to be sitting at home watching a movie while my buddy is up in his attic or down in his crawl-space busting his tail and getting frustrated.

“Let us get frustrated together” - Jason.

SKILL SET
Minor carpentry
and minor plumbing
Some automotive
painting
Pretty much any kind of grunt work

RECENT JOBS
landscaping
painting
and my mind is pretty much drawing a blank as to anything else at the moment

TO LEARN
I’ll pretty much be up for anything. You might have to give me a minute but 9 times out of 10, I can figure it out and if nothing else, I (suprisingly) really enjoy manual labor so don’t hesitate to call.

TOOLS
screwdriver, hammer, wrench, ax, shovel, and TWO MASSIVE GUNS if needed!!!!!! Otherwise, I’ll be borrowing from y’all.

Okay…so this doesn’t exactly follow suit….but I thought I’d throw this out there if anyone needs help or wants to learn: (The only reason I’m posting this is because these things can cost up to $15 each, every time they are done at the vet).

ANIMAL SKILL SET:
Clipping nails (cat and dog)
Medicallly cleaing ears
Administering meds to unwilling pets
Expressing anal glands in dogs(I can’t believe I’m admitting I can do this)
Induce vomitting if animal eats a toxin
Deworming (mostly for puppies and kittens)

RECENT JOBS:
These are all things that I do for my pets at home, when needed. I was medically trained and certified to do them.

TO LEARN:
I’d be up to learning how to lay a brick path in our backyard.
And learn how to properly plant a tree. We’ve had a tree-casualty.

TOOLS:
Ear cleaning solution for dogs and cats
Cat and dog nail clippers
Dosing syringes/ pill administers
Veterinary Handbook (with lists of toxic plants and household items)

Ya’ll, this is awesome! Matt and I usually call my dad when we need some help, but he is two hours away and is getting older (in terms of doing heavy duty work). We don’t have a very extensive skill set, but we’re happy to lend a hand however we can! I’ll let Matt post his skill set, etc. My skills are more in the area of computers if anyone is interested in that kind of service! - Emily

(1) Skills:

bow hunting
computerhacking
drywall- hanging, taping, bedding, texture(Did for 7 years)
trim
minor framing
automotive..
A little bit of everything in construction
(2) I haven’t done many jobs in the past 12 months other than maybe lay some sod. I did construction for about 7 or 8 years so I did a little bit of everything. I mainly did drywall so I would say I am expert at that, unfortunately.
(3) I would like to put in some sort of patio out back this summer. I don’t have much experience with this other than decking. I also need to install a disposal which will require putting in an electrical outlet.
(4)Tools:
Banjo(drywall taping tool not the musical instrument), general dywall tools, miter box, reciprocating saw, skil saw, orbital sander, impact wrench, chain saw, gas hedge trimmer(I have an electric one someone can have), various handtools, hi-lift jack, car ramps, various other painting tools. I am planning on getting a air compressor and nail guns soon but don’t have it available yet.

We have a lot of skills on here.
How about some moving skills - see the unloading a truck post!

Thanks much,
